Essen Family Youth Hostel
in the coal-mining district and in the countryside, in the heart of the Capital of Culture 2010
Thanks to its location in the former coal-mining district, Essen Youth Hostel is an ideal base for excursions to see the industrial heritage of the Ruhr. There are many hiking and cycling trails in the surrounding area. The Ruhr is ideal for canoeing and Baldeneysee lake offers families great leisure activities: boat trips or bike rides, a skating trip or a surfing course.
Something special for families
- The area around Baldeneysee lake offers excellent cycling, inline skating and hiking opportunities. Thanks to the pleasure boats, you can vary the routes as you wish (including bike transport). Also at the lake: a playground, mini golf, bike and pedal boat rental.
- Bed & Bike: certified by the ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club - General German Bicycle Club) as being bike-friendly accommodation.
- The more than 40 stations of the Industrial Heritage Trail can be easily reached from the youth hostel. The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, for example, is an impressive industrial monument and exhibition centre as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
