The "Niedenburg" is a little castle located high above the Hohenwarte reservoir in the village of Neidenberga, set in the heart of the picturesque scenery of the Thuringian Highland/Upper Saale Nature Park. Whether you fancy ship and boat rides on the reservoir, walking along the nature park hiking trails or pedalling along the Saale Cycle Route - the water-rich environment of the "Thüringer Meer" ("Thuringian Sea") region boasts plenty of leisure activities and attractions.

The Youth Hostel is located directly next to the Hohenwarte reservoir in the village of Neidenberga.

The Youth Hostel has 60 beds. Guests can expect a unique sleeping experience in our "Pirate's Nest". Each room is equipped with an en-suite shower and WC.

There are lots of recreational activities to enjoy here in Neidenberga; whether an authentic Thuringian barbecue party, sports and games evenings, or perhaps a campfire - there's something for everyone here. If that's still not enough, why not try a tour of the reservoir or explore the enchanting Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes?

Sightseeing and excursions

How about a tour of the reservoir? Set sail and enjoy the unrivalled scenery of the Hohenwarte reservoir. Start off at Greez beach, below the Youth Hostel. Everyone boards the boats and you set off for Hopfenmühle or to Saalthal Alter. There you'll have a chance to get a bite to eat and enjoy some sports. You can return either by boat or on foot along the path that leads around the reservoir. There are different tours available.
Why not try Saalfeld's Fairy Grottoes? The Fairy Grottoes are the town of Saalfeld's main attraction. Every year they attract young and old visitors alike, who are amazed by the incredible colours of these stalactite caves.
Immerse yourself in this stunning world, which is open all year round, and be inspired by the grottoes' beauty. Take in the unique atmosphere of the "Fairy-Tale Cathedral" with its "Holy Grail Castle", and enjoy a fascinating display of light and spectacular music. Themed even tours allow you to explore the Fairy Grottoes as you follow in miners' footsteps, or take a guided tour with the Grotto Fairy.
