Beaches, mudflats and dunes in List on the isle of Sylt

Anyone travelling to the island of Sylt can leave the cares of everyday life behind. All around there's nothing but ocean, waves and the mudflats of the North Sea. Seemingly endless white sandy beaches, cliffs and green marshes. The town of List is on the eastern side of the island, in the Wadden Sea National Park. Practically the entire municipality is an acknowledge nature reserve. In the harbour, ferries travel between Sylt and Römö in Denmark. List-Mövenberg Youth Hostel is set among the dunes. It is the northernmost youth hostel in Germany and has its own youth beach, which can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes.

Locations & directions

The North Sea island of Sylt is connected to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway. Trains transporting passengers and cars run over this causeway. You can take a bus to List from Westerland station (about 19 km). The hostel is 2 km north-west of List and is only 800 metres from the North Sea

  • The hostel consists of four buildings, spread over the large grounds and surrounded by dunes. 397 beds, mostly in 4-bed and 6-bed rooms, some with shower/toilet, single and double rooms for carers, separate shower/toilet for carers, 8 common rooms, TV room in each of the three dormitory buildings, piano, table tennis room, drying room, laundry room with washer and dryer, football, streetball, large climbing frame, volleyball, table football, table tennis. The highlight of the hostel is its own stretch of beach. It is supervised by lifeguards from June to September.

List on Sylt - right in the north of the island

List is located in the Wadden Sea National Park, ideal for an excursion to the mudflats. The "Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten" ("Forces of Nature Experience Centre") and its multimedia exhibition can provide you with more information about living on the coast. From the port of List, you can take boats to the seal banks or travel around the "elbow". Boat trips to the neighbouring islands of Föhr, Amrum and to the "Hallig" (small island) of Hooge are possible from Hörnum. The bicycle is the best way to explore the island's villages and its unique landscape of heathland, dunes, high cliffs, salt marshes and mudflats. Bicycles can be rented from Listrad bicycle rental shop located in the hostel.
