Kappeln on the Baltic Sea fjord of Schlei

Kappeln is located near the Baltic Sea Fjord of Schlei. The Schlei issues into the Baltic Sea only a few kilometers past the city. The Downtown area with its gorgeous, restored houses, slow-paced alleys and its busy harbor area are quaint. This town has already been part of a film set. The youth hostel in Kappeln offers a giant backyard. In addition, guests have the possibility to see passing ships on the water. This area offers about 14 beaches. The extensive beach, Weidefälder Strand, is only 7 kilometers away. Surfing- and kayaking equipment can be rented nearby. Furthermore, biking routes along the sea are a great activity.

Locations & directions

Kappeln Youth Hostel is situated on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea inlet of Schlei, just a 15-minute walk from the town centre. The nearest railway station is Süderbrarup. The bus station is 2.5 km from the hostel.

From the outdoor area one has a great view on the Baltic Sea Fjord of Schlei as well as on the city. The hostel has 176 beds in double to 6-bed-rooms. All rooms are equipped with a sink. Rooms for team leaders and teachers are also equipped with a bathroom. In addition, there are family rooms, 5 conference rooms, 2 club rooms, lounging room with a fire place, a party/disco room, billiard, foosball, a giant ping pong room, beach volleyball area, basketball, a playground for smaller children, bonfire place, and BBQ area. The hostel is also very family friendly.

Kappeln on the Baltic Sea fjord of Schlei

Ever considered a bike ride along the water? Cyclists staying in Kappeln can choose from various cycle routes along the Schlei. And if you don't have your own bike, you can borrow one in near by. The nearest beach where you can swim is only 6 km away. Whether windsurfing, sailing or canoeing - Kappeln has a lot to offer in order to spend one’s time off. Other sightseeing activities involve: the church, Nikolaikirche, at the market square, downtown, the mansions of the 18th and 19th century, as well as the largest Dutch Mill in Schleswig-Holstein. All this is worth a visit. Another must see while here, is the „Heringszaun“ („herring fence“), a well known fishing method from the past time.
