The Youth Hostel's fantastic location means it's just as easy to head into town as it is to to seek out more natural surroundings. The Hostel's own expansive meadow area is great for playing football, beach volleyball and basketball. Fans of table tennis can use the four outdoor tables. In the immediate vicinity a modern water park (Aqualip), a Kneipp (hydrotherapy) pool and a heated open-air pool provide plenty of opportunity for you to splash around. At Teuto-Kletterpark (climbing park) it's time to see things from a different perspective! Clamber across five adventure courses constructed around the living trees at a height of 5 to 12m.

Action and relaxation ...

Detmold is situated right next to the Teutoburg Forest in the heart of the Lippe Uplands. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of this landscape by going on long walks, for example to the Hermann Monument - giving you the chance to try out northern Germany's biggest climbing centre - or to the Hiddeser Bent Nature Reserve. This is where you can really get to know Westphalia! Germany's biggest open-air museum, covering more than 80 hectares of fantastic scenery, is only around 15 minutes away from the Youth Hostel on foot. Scenic walks through Lippe Forest are just as tempting as romantic strolls through the "princely" old town in the city of Detmold, with its half-timbered and gabled houses, castle and the fascinating Lippe Museum. The choice is yours!

Exciting programmes

Dotted with historic monuments, the unmissable landscape lines the famous Hermannsweg Trail, which is the main hiking route through the Teutoburg Forest. Day-long tours might include going via "Berlebeck", Europe's largest and oldest eagle centre, to the Externsteine rock formation in Horn, or perhaps to the "Germanengehöft" ("Germanic Farmstead") archaeological museum in Oerlinghausen. School classes will enjoy our interactive education programmes, e.g. in the woodland rope-climbing centre. They can help turn your class into a team whilst building confidence and raising self-esteem in individual pupils. Relax of an evening and enjoy what Detmold's cultural scene has to offer, with a local theatre, cinemas and a wide range of events.
