Dachau: experience history.

They say that one in ten citizens of Dachau was an artist around 1900 - and Dachau, the 1200 year-old city, was seen as a city of art at the time. Dachau's artist colony is one aspect of the city. But the central memorial site for the Nazi crimes is another. Dachau Youth Hostel is located near the memorial site. An ideal starting point for tours of the concentration camp memorial site and home of the Max Mannheimer Study Centre.

Max Mannheimer Study Centre

Max Mannheimer is a survivor of the concentration camp and name patron of the foundation. Today, it offers one-day or several-day seminars for school classes, youth associations, students and other interested groups at Dachau Youth Hostel.

Musical flair

But Dachau has much more to offer than educational events revolving around the memorial site. Dachau sees itself as a city of arts with a long tradition. The Dachauer Musiksommer (summer of music), Dachauer Kulturschranne (culture fair) and Dachauer Schlosskonzerte (concerts at the castle) take place in locations where the artists' colony used to be a home and inspiration to many a painter. A castle? Yes, of course. With gardens. Soak up the atmosphere of the place that was Count Max Emanuel's favourite country residence 400 years ago - it will make for a relaxing and worth-while experience!
