Dating back to the 13th century, the castle complex is located on a rocky outcrop above Bilstein in the Sauerland. Our Youth Hostel is highly suitable for medieval-themed and environmental activity programmes. Outdoors there's an area for the football enthusiasts among you. The old shed and forge make for comfortable barbecue shelters. Music lovers are welcome to use guitars, a harpsichord and pianos, including a grand piano. The nearest sports ground, open-air pool and crazy golf are just a stone's throw from the Hostel, while there are two indoor swimming pools about 11 and 18 km away.

Our 226 beds are really comfy, and spread across 34 rooms which sleep 4, 6, 8 or 10. Even teachers and group leaders don't have to sleep in the dungeon! There are 17 single/twin rooms available. We also have a number of rooms suitable for training courses, seminars and a spot of "castle romance", with seating for 90, 50, 45, 40, 35 and 30 people respectively. Larger events can be held in our hall, which can hold up to 150 people and has an open hearth and barbecue facilities. Modern technology, including a television, video and DVD player as well as overhead and slide projectors, is available for presentations or lessons.

Our suggestions

The following are our tips for particularly nice and interesting destinations:
Be sure not to miss the Karl May Festival in Elspe, which is a unique experience for all, whether young or old. Oberhundem Panorama Park, Ramsbeck mine and Fort Fun adventure park are all ideal for a great day out.
In collaboration with biologist Sandra Schulte-Braun, the Youth Hostel also offers fantastic guided nature walks.
