to the World Youth Hostel at Burg Altena.
You've chosen a truly historic place to stay. It was from here that the very idea of youth hostel associations was to spread around the world. Richard Schirrmann founded the Youth Hostel Association here. Enjoy the unique atmosphere this castle has to offer.
We would be happy to help you organise your excursions and will do all we can to make sure your stay is an unforgettable experience.

We look forward to seeing you!

Situated in the heart of the Märkischer Kreis, Altena is a town of contrasts: On the one hand it's an industrial town - all sorts of wires, in particular, have been manufactured here for many years - while on the other it is very close to nature, surrounded as it is by forest. The majestic castle looks down on the picturesque town centre next to the river Lenne. In addition to the Youth Hostel, the stately walls are home to the County of Mark Museum, the Mark Forge Museum and the World Youth Hostels Museum.

Burg Altena is particularly suited to school classes, families, clubs and recreation groups. There are 36 beds in total, in five bedrooms with 4, 13 and 14 beds as well as two rooms for group leaders with 2 and 3 beds. The Youth Hostel at Burg Altena has had an additional guesthouse added to it. In the Art Nouveau villa located below the castle there is also a day room as well as three bedrooms. Here guests are accommodated in 7-bed dorms, one 6-bed room as well as two rooms for group leaders. The rooms for group leaders have a separate shower and WC. A further five additional beds can be made available if necessary. Meals are still served within the historical castle walls.

An exciting programme

Altena and the Märkischer Kreis boast plenty of tourist attractions. Ideal destinations for a day out include "Phänomenta" in Lüdenscheid, a "hands-on" science museum with 130 different areas, and "AquaMagis" aqua park in Plettenberg. Fancy a day-long walk? We recommend Dechen Cave, Hohenlimburg Castle via Wiblingwerde and Fuelbecke dam via Bergfeld-Horst. If you'd prefer a more relaxing return journey, simply hope on a bus or train back.
