Location
With only 5000 inhabitants, Oberammergau has remained an idyllic small town to this day. The world-famous Passion Play Theatre on the banks of the river Ammer has a mountain backdrop, and the spacious youth hostel is located in a quiet riverbank spot at the south-western edge of the town. The Kofel peak, the town's symbol, towers above the hostel.

Summer & winter paradise
An extensive network of hiking trails awaits guests in summer. In fact, in 2005 the Ammergau Alps were declared the second-most favourite hiking area in Germany and the most popular one in Bavaria. Step outside the youth hostel and traverse the Ammer valley on bike or cross-country skis, all the way to Linderhof Castle and into Austria! In winter, the Oberammergau Family Ski Area offers skiing for all levels of ability as well as a freeride ski run (Germany's steepest) on Mount Laber. Oberammergau additionally lies at the heart of about 100 kilometres of cross-country ski runs, making it Bavaria's most popular resort for fans of this winter sport, and snow guns also stand at the ready to ensure downhill skiing all season long. Your car will also have a holiday as the hiking trails, new downhill mountain bike track, cross-country ski runs and the local downhill skiing area can all be reached from the youth hostel on foot, by ski shuttle bus or public transport.
