Dachau and the arts
Dachau was founded over 1,200 years ago, making it quite a bit older than the city of Munich. Due to the concentration camp set up outside the town in 1933, Dachau has become a synonym for Nazi terror since the end of the Second World War.
Dachau's earlier significance as an artists' colony and its 1,200-year past are less known, however. It is said that in the 19th and early 20th centuries, every tenth inhabitant was a painter, including such famous artists as Adolf Hölzel, Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer, and leading German painters such as Carl Spitzweg and Lovis Corinth came to Dachau again and again to capture the special light of the Dachauer Moos fenlands in their open-air work. During this time, women in particular were beginning to engage in art on a serious level. Many underwent tuition in the private painting schools of the artists' colony as it was not until 1926 that women were admitted to the State Art Academy in Munich, the nearest city. Paintings by many of the artists that flocked to the town can be seen in Dachau Painting Gallery, and the town maintains its artistic heritage to this day, as evidenced by the many galleries and the wide range of art produced in the town. Dachau is also an active member of EuroArt, the European Federation of Artists' colonies.
