In the 7th and 8th centuries, a settlement came about at a toll station on the Salzach river. This marked the beginnings of Burghausen castle, which in terms of size and significance went on to play a decisive role in the fortunes of the community at its foot for many centuries, with the townspeople experiencing not only periods of political and economic flourishing but also difficult times. Burghausen is redolent with history yet also a modern town on the border to Austria.
