The buildings of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) are continuously being renovated, modernized, and to some degree enlarged. After construction guests of the youth hostels will find a high level of comfort and an improved standard in all cases. DJH presents seven selected examples of buildings that will be completed this year.
Martin-Buber Youth Hostel Überlingen
Lake Constance in southwestern Germany is one of the most attractive holiday destinations. The city of Überlingen has the longest waterfront, and also offers a southern flair and a Mediterranean climate. The youth hostel is just 100 metres from the lake, and is now among the most modern in the region.
The building was renovated for 17 months. All 62 bedrooms received new furniture and are now equipped with a shower/toilet. Almost all rooms, with 240 beds in total, offer a view of Lake Constance. All rooms are now wheelchair accessible. A large breakfast room with view of the lake and a conservatory make for a perfect start to the day. Multiple large community and conference rooms to a degree also offer an equally fantastic view.
Energy consumption is significantly reduced due to new supply lines and a new heating system.
Winterberg Youth Hostel
The winter sport elite meet up in Winterberg. This small town in the Rothaar Mountains in North Rhine-Westphalia has an internationally reputation. Bobsleigh and luge World Cup races are held here.
Youth Hostel Winterberg (275 beds) is now even more attractive: The bedrooms and meeting rooms have been completely modernized, and the building has received an extension; a large foyer and bistro in the style of mountain lodges. There is also now a climbing wall on the building, a low-level ropes course, and a mountain bike mini course. Children will enjoy the football court and a lot of new play equipment.
The proximity to many leisure facilities remains unchanged, with biking, hiking, and ski arena. Mountain bike trails and the bike park will beckon you in the summer. The Winterberg alpine tour offers great views when hiking in the winter, and the summer toboggan run promises exciting experiences. The Sauerland winter sports arena invites you in the winter; guests can choose between alpine skiing in the ski carousel, cross-country trails, and huts.
Lindau Youth Hostel
Staying on the estate near Lake Constance, close to historic Lindau city centre, at the Lindau youth hostel (252 beds) guests will enjoy picture book holidays. You can get active in, on, and around the lake here, with swimming, surfing, sailing in summer, and skiing and snowboarding fun in the winter.
The 252-bed youth hostel's fresh ideas are also visible on the building itself. A facelift has provided more atmosphere in the entrance area of the "Rosenhofes", which is listed as a historical monument. A fascinating spring allows the water to softly ripple into the lobby, and brings the flair of nearby Lake Constance right into the house. Other rooms are equipped with shower and toilet, and natural materials from the region create a pleasant atmosphere.
Aachen Youth Hostel
Aachen Youth Hostel (180 beds) is a meeting place for people from all over Europe. The in-house bistro, sun terrace, and bright conference rooms are a meeting place for young people from different backgrounds: Aachen and its historical past attract many visitors. The Aachen Cathedral the coronation church of German kings and the tomb of Charlemagne is an important witness to the turbulent past. Now a World Heritage Site, the historic town hall and the Elisenbrunnen are among the city's major attractions.
The "new construction" part of the building was renovated and made fit for meetings and family guests. Among other things, the bedroom sanitary facilities and furniture have been completely updated.
Monschau Castle Youth Hostel
A rustic ambiance, rubble stone walls, and the castle's location on a hill place guests in the time of knights and lords. Inside theyouth hostel (131 beds) is comfortably and brightly decorated. The building has been completely renovated. Among other things, all rooms have received a sanitary unit with shower and toilet.
Monschau Castle offers a unique view over the old city centre and its romantic alleyways. All attractions at the Eifel National Park and the High Fens – Eifel Nature Park are within easy reach. Guests will encounter varied flora and fauna and impressive natural landscapes on unspoiled moors.
Waldbröl "Panarbora" Youth Hostel
The Waldbröl nature adventure park "Panarbora", with a treetop path and lookout tower, is in the Bergisches Land region, just 50 kilometres east of Cologne. The new youth hostel on the park grounds makes childhood dreams come true: In the five (heated) tree houses you can stay at a height of seven metres. The three "global villages" with 170 beds have now been completed, built in the style of the Asian yurt, South American stilt houses, and African mud huts. The family house is oriented toward guests who prefer to stay in the conventional manner. This building features ten cosy double and family rooms with modern furnishings. The "Panarbora" youth hostel offers maximum comfort in natural surroundings.
Berlin Ostkreuz Youth Hostel
The fourth and currently most modern youth hostel of the German Youth Hostel Association is being constructed in a building listed as a historic monument near the Ostkreuz railway station in Berlin. The centrally located former technical college will open on July 1, 2016.
The hostel has 445 beds, all rooms are equipped with shower/toilet, and are suitable for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6-bed occupancy. Also included: a welcoming foyer, a cosy bistro, dining rooms for breakfast, half board, full board, recreation rooms for group activities, and 18 conference rooms with a large hall for workshops, classes, and conferences.
The new youth hostel offers more than just a roof over your head. Guests will experience community and hospitality here. Special entertainment programs for children, youth, and families, will bring participants together with shared activities.
Educationally worthwhile Berlin-related programmes and programme modules will make school trips into a unique experience, strengthening self-confidence and the community of students and youth.
